When starting PineRock, a friend gave our Founder, Ed Romanoff, a copy of Jim Collin’s book Built to Last. He was struck by Collin’s findings that successful companies over the long haul shared one common trait: an articulated culture. This idea surprised Ed but also rang true. So, on a his next business trip, Ed jotted down what he thought PineRocks core values should be. It was based on doing great work with high integrity. He wanted our values to function almost like a ‘Bill of Rights’ that would create a gravity of their own, and become stronger than any individual personality. He wanted every employee to know they’d be encouraged and supported to make decisions consistent with our values under any circumstance, even if there was no one in management to get approval from.
What’s been most fascinating, is the enduring nature of the values we chose in the very beginning. After twenty years in business, Ed became curious to know if the newer generation of employees would find our values relevant. Despite the changing face and age of our workforce, and the changes in technology, our fundamental values of respectful collaboration are still valid and supported today. We didn’t have to change a single one.
